I still remember the phone call from the school.
The voice on the other end sounded serious immediately. They asked me to come in right away. No details. No explanation.
As I drove there, my mind raced through every possible scenario, but nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to hear.
My daughter had become involved in a TikTok trend centered around fake school shooting threats.
Even writing those words still makes me sick.
Like many parents, I thought my daughter was safe because she spent most of her time at home. She was quiet, creative, and constantly on her phone watching videos, messaging friends, and scrolling through social media.
I never realized how dangerous online pressure had become.
At school, students had started participating in a trend where kids posted threatening jokes, fake warnings, or suspicious videos referencing school violence just to get attention online. Some did it for views. Some did it because everyone else was doing it. Some did it because they were afraid of being excluded.
My daughter did not even fully understand the seriousness of it when she got pulled into it.
The bullying and pressure started first.
“Do it or you’re scared.”
“It’s just a joke.”
“No one is taking it seriously.”
“Everyone’s posting stuff like this.”
What started as online pressure quickly turned into a real world nightmare.
The school went into lockdown.
Parents panicked.
Police became involved.
And suddenly my child was sitting in an office being questioned over something that could have permanently affected her future.
I remember looking at her while she cried and repeated:
“I didn’t mean it.”
“I thought it was just online.”
“I didn’t think this would happen.”
That moment broke me.
Because underneath the mistake was still a child whose brain was not mature enough to fully understand the consequences of what social media pressure can lead to.
Thankfully, because there was no actual intent to harm anyone and she cooperated fully, the situation did not end with permanent criminal charges. But it easily could have.
All because of viral trends they thought were harmless.
That experience changed me forever.
I realized social media is no longer just entertainment for children. It shapes behavior, emotions, identity, and decision making in ways many parents do not fully understand.
That is why I created this guide.
Not to scare parents.
But to wake them up.
Because children today are being influenced by millions of strangers online every single day, and one moment of pressure can change a life forever.
If there is one thing I want parents to understand, it is this:
Do not assume your child understands the consequences of what they see online.
Sometimes they are still just children trying to fit in with a world that rewards dangerous behavior for attention.
Protect Your Childs World was created from a very personal place in my life. After seeing how bullying, social media pressure, dangerous online trends, and unsafe content can impact a child emotionally and mentally, I made it my mission to help other parents better protect their children online before something serious happens.
In this guide, I walk parents through practical ways to help safeguard children from online predators, cyberbullying, harmful content, and social media dangers. I also share simple privacy settings for TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Roblox, warning signs parents should never ignore, and ways to build healthier and safer digital habits at home.
I created this guide because I believe no parent should feel lost or unprepared when it comes to protecting their child in today’s digital world.
